Level 3 Certificate in Trauma-Informed Life Story Work

The qualification is aimed at supporting professionals (social workers, family support workers, children’s support workers, and therapists) who support children, young people, and their families to navigate the often challenging process of life story work.

The Level 3 Certificate in Trauma-Informed Life Story Work consists of six units:

  • Unit 1 Understanding the Importance of Trauma-Informed Life Story Work. This unit explains the concept of trauma-informed life story work and how it can support individuals who have experienced trauma.

  • Unit 2 Making sense of the child’s history: This unit emphasises the importance of communicating a child or young person's story in a way that is appropriate for their stage of development.

  • Unit 3 Understanding the child or young person: Here, the learners will understand the importance of recognising a child's emotional age and implementing appropriate life story work, as well as the need to identify the implications of unprocessed trauma when working with a child's life story.

  • Unit 4 Communicating difficult histories: This unit develops learners understanding of how to navigate a child or young person's life narrative sensitively, identifying strategies to help them recognise unmet needs, and overcome obstacles.

  • Unit 5 Triggers in and outside of the session, behaviours, and how to support them: This unit focuses on triggers that occur both in and outside of a life story work session, as well as behaviours associated with trauma.

  • Unit 6: Looking after yourself: In this unit, learners will understand how to prioritise self-care and well-being to effectively support children and young people through trauma-informed life story work.
